National Park Zine

National Park Zine integrates nature photography with natural history to tell the story of a different national park in each issue. Presented as a series of lived experiences, each issue includes color as well as black-and-white photographs to offer different perspectives on the geology, plant communities, and wildlife of each park. It is hoped that this will afford readers the opportunity to experience national parks in ways they may not have been able to do firsthand.

A Photographic book about Yellowstone's Bison | Wildlife Photography | Yellowstone National Park | Bison

Issue 1. In this issue, the natural history of Yellowstone's bison is explored. Bison have roamed the park's territory since the Pleistocene glaciers retreated some 10,000 years ago.

National Park Zine: Arches and the Golden Hour is a book about Photographs about Arches National Park | Landscape and nature photography | Natural history

Issue 2. This issue explores the geology of Arches National Park and the ways in which light and meteorological conditions can change our perception of the landscape.

National Park Zine: Indiana Dunes National Park is a book with Photographs about Indiana Dunes Stat and National Parks | Landscape and nature phtotography | natural history

Issue 3. This issue explores Indiana Dunes National Park. The Park was originally established as a national lake shore in 1966, becoming a national park in 2019. This issue is organized around four environments: beach, dunes, woods, and wetlands.

National Park Zine: A Yellowstone National Park Winter is a book about Photographs of Yellowstone National Park in the winter | Llandscape, nature and wildlife photography | natural history

Issue 4. This issue explores the snow-covered landscapes of Yellowstone National Park. The snow gives the park an even more pristine look and feel than it has in summer, and it changes the acoustical environment as well—new fallen snow absorbs sound, creating a quiet and calm landscape.

National Park Zine: Badlands National Park is a book about landscape, wildlife, and nature photography | Natural history

Issue 5. This issue explores the geology and wildlife of Badlands National Park. Geologically, the park is young: only about 500,000 years old. It was only about a half-million years ago that water began to erode the land, cutting downward through the layers of rock creating a terrain of deep canyons, towering spires, and jagged peaks.

National Park Zine: Yellowstone National Park 150th anniversary is a book about landscape, wildlife, and nature photography | Natural history

Issue 6. I have been fortunate to have spent 50 years hiking, photographing, and learning about Yellowstone. For this issue, I have drawn from my earlier photographs going back to the sixties to provide a personal and historical perspective on the park's natural history and 150th anniversary.

National Park Zine: Glacier National Park is a book about landscape, wildlife, and nature photography | Natural history

Issue 7. This issue explores Glacier National Park. Glacier is a land of rugged mountains, massive peaks, and sheer rock walls that tower high above valleys all carved out by the Pleistocene glaciers. Nestled in the peaks are subalpine glaciers that formed during the Little Ice Age. Glacier is packed with waterfalls, streams, and turquoise-colored lakes. All surrounded by primitive forests, a mix of wildflowers, and an abundance of wildlife—an extraordinarily beautiful place built upon a geological foundation shaped by earth processes.

National Park Zine: Wind Cave

Issue 8. This issue explores Wind Cave National Park. I share photographs of the prairie, representing my experiences as far back as my days of service as a seasonal park ranger. I do this to promote an appreciation of the park’s prairie ecosystem and to inspire the reader to hike the prairie trails. Wind Cave is much more than a cave tour.

National Park Zine: Zion National Park

Issue 9. This issue explores Zion National Park.  In this issue I share photographs from my many visits to Zion, from spring snowstorms that dusted the plateau to heavy rains that resulted in majestic waterfalls cascading down canyon walls.

National Park Zine: Bryce Canyon National Park

Issue 10. The spires, pinnacles, and hoodoos of Bryce Canyon create a unique and spectacular landscape. It is a magnificent display of geological wonder, and it dominates the panoramic views from atop the plateau. The force of flowing water, and freezing and thawing (frost-wedging), has weathered and eroded the land, creating Gothic-like rock formations that stir the imagination and arouse the emotions. All of this creates a view seen nowhere else in the world.
